False friends and anglicisms

Avoiding French words used in their English sense, and English structures translated word for word. They are the most common marks of an anglophone writer.

False friends

Some French words look like English ones and mean something else. Éventuellement means possibly, not eventually (finir par, à terme). Actuellement means currently, not actually (en fait). A librairie sells books; a bibliothèque lends them.

At work, one applies for a job by poser sa candidature, not appliquer; an agenda is a planner, and a meeting’s agenda is l’ordre du jour.

Structural anglicisms

Some calques keep French words but an English structure: prendre place (for avoir lieu), être en charge de (for être responsable de), sur une base régulière (for régulièrement), faire du sens (for avoir du sens).

Canadian workplaces have their own: céduler (for planifier or fixer), canceller (for annuler), un meeting (for une réunion). Termium Plus and the Banque de dépannage linguistique give the standard forms.
